The incumbent is the Public Programs Manager for the U.S.. Botanic Garden (USBG), responsible for leading, planning, developing and carrying out programs that fulfill the USBG's scientific, horticultural, educational, environmental, and curatorial missions.
PhD or equivalent experience is preferred.
MUST have experience with scientific written communications such as articles, papers, signage, interpretation and publications.
SCIENTIFIC LEADERSHIP AND COORDINATION:
-Responsible for development of relevant scientific programs for the U.S. Botanic Garden (USBG) including partnerships, research projects, interpretation, education, exhibits, and publications.
PLANT COLLECTION:
-Responsible for leading renovation projects, plant collection development, exhibit content and botanical accuracy as well as management of meaningful and effective interpretation.
EXHIBIT PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT:
-Plans and designs horticultural and botanical exhibits, selecting the plants to be included, as well as developing interpretation for the garden based on accurate science.
HUMAN RESOURCES/ADMINISTRATION:
-Supervises a group of employees performing work at the GS-11 level and below. Provides administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit. Oversees and manages the gardens' volunteer program.
-Performs the administrative and human resource management functions relative to the staff supervised. Plans, schedules, and assigns work to subordinates. Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff members; provides feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance. Provides advice, counsel, and/or instruction to staff members. Recommends or approves appointments, selections, or reassignments to positions appropriate to the selection authority delegated. Effects disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area. Carries out Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and program activities.
EXHIBIT PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT:
-Plans and designs horticultural and botanical exhibits, selecting the plants to be included, as well as developing interpretation for the garden based on accurate science.
PUBLIC RELATIONS/PUBLIC AFFAIRS:
-Performs work related to public affairs program activities, such as coordinating news and information media interviews, developing communication plans, coordinating agency information programs, evaluating agency public affairs programs, etc. Evaluates impacts and effectiveness of public affairs programs.
-Coordinates visits of VIPs to The Architect of the Capitol and U.S. Botanic Garden (USBG) facilities and events.
-Responsible for the gardens outreach including website, social media, and communications.
