    The closing date will be dependent on the USDA Forest Service needs (e.g., budget, length of season, etc.). Referral Lists will be issued to selecting officials throughout the life of this recruitment bulletin.

    The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs. Availability of government housing, federal day care facilities, and bargaining unit status will vary by location. Pay rates vary depending on location. See the OPM website at www.opm.gov for additional information on pay rates.

    Positions with varying tours of duty. These positions may require shift work outside of normal working hours, including weekends, evenings, and holidays. Tours of duty include full-time, less than full-time, or intermittent.

    Some positions have employment conditions that must be met within 60 days of hire such as: a valid State drivers license; a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification; a Commercial Drivers License (CDL); pre-appointment and random drug testing; or a physical or "medical" examination. Failure to meet any of the required medical qualifications will be considered disqualifying for employment.

    A mandatory recertification will be required to maintain an active available applicant pool. An eligible applicant who does not communicate his/her continued interest in employment within the prescribed period (60 days) will be placed in inactive status. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age upon appointments.

    Positions may be filled as career ladders (GS-186-4) or could be filled at the full performance level at the GS-0186-5 dependent upon the individual unit's needs.

Duties:

  • Provides practical information, instruction, guidance, or advice and counsel to members of a group residential facility.

    Works as a team member, offering instruction and guidance on positive social skills, such as instructing students in diversity issues and conflict resolution skills. Assists students in meeting career goals through the use of a personal career development plan. Works with other staff members to provide personalized learning opportunities for students that emphasize employability skills. Provides positive feedback by recognizing positive behavior and student achievements.

    Assists in ensuring that a caring and supportive environment exists for the students. Assists in providing an attractive physical and social environment that is appropriate to varying student needs and levels of maturity. Intervenes by correcting inappropriate behavior and non-performance.

    Group Leadership in a Residential Living Environment 50%
    Works as a trainee, addressing group living issues of limited difficulty, such as working with students and staff to ensure a safe and secure living environment. Works as a team member to create an environment in the residence where student input and feedback is encouraged and valued.

    May be responsible for operating government vehicles including sedans, light pick-ups, 12-16 passenger vans, and 20 to 40 passenger buses. This may include buses with airbrakes.

    Provides assistance in scheduling, coordinating, and supervising work details, recreational and other group activities. Assists in planning group activities, maintaining order and discipline among group members, and providing limited leadership and direction in the performance of daily housekeeping duties. Works with students to maintain the dormitory in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.

    Assists in maintaining an individual record for each student that contains basic identifying information, emergency contacts, and written parental consent (for minors) for weekend passes to approved destinations. Checks the performance and behavior progress of students in the assigned dormitory.
  • Provides, or assists in providing, leadership and supervision to enrollees in a residential group living situation.
