    These positions are permanent seasonal; guaranteed 13 pay periods with a requirement to work an additional 2 pay periods a year as needed. After competition of the Apprentice program and placed in permanent position of record at the GS-462-5 Senior Firefighter level, employees will be moved to permanent full time (26/0).
    This position is developmental to the full performance GS-462-05 grade level (Wildland Senior Firefighter). Applicants will be eligible for non-competitive promotion to the GS-05 without further competition upon meeting OPM qualifications, satisfactory work performance, supervisory recommendation, AND fully qualified to perform the work of the occupation at or above the level of ¿FFT1- Squad Boss'.

    The salary range provided in this announcement is based on the underlying salary table for the General schedule effective January 2009. Positions filled from this announcement will have pay set based on an approved locality Pay or Special Salary Rate designated for the specific duty location.
    Applicants for apprenticeship shall meet the following minimum qualifications:
    A. Be at least 18 years of age (proof will be required).
    B. Have graduated from an accredited high school or received a general equivalency diploma (GED) (proof will be required).
    C. Meet the minimum physical fitness standards established for the occupation of Wildland Firefighter at the arduous level. Incumbent is required to complete Health Screening Questionnaire (HSQ) and/or a physical examination prior to taking the Work Capacity Test (WCT). For further information on the WCT, see the 'Other Significant Facts' section of this announcement.
    D. Possess and maintain a valid State Driver's License during the term of apprenticeship.
    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT There is a condition of employment/appointment for this position. The selected applicant must complete the provision of the National Apprenticeship Standards no less than two, nor more than 4 calendar years from the date of entry into the program. These conditions of employment may change during the term of apprenticeship as approved by the National Interagency Joint Apprenticeship Committee (NIJAC). National Apprentice Standards can be found at www.wfap.net/program.html. Conditions of employment include:
    1. Formal classroom training consisting of the Wildland Fire Academy (both Basic and Advanced Academies) at the wildland Fire Training Center, McClellan, CA; and
    2. 4,000 hours of on-the-job training as well as hours in related instruction and supplemental technical training. An applicant for apprenticeship can be credited up to 2,000 hours of creditable experience that meets apprentice work processes categories; and
    3. Formal class work at the identified passing level; and
    4. An examination of Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190) passes at 80% level or above at Fire Academy. This exam is given the first day of the Basic Academy; and
    5. A valid State Driver's License.
    6. Some positions may require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), as determined by the position description, and will be subject to pre-appointment and random drug testing. Applicants will be notified of required CDL and testing requirements prior to job offer.
    Selected applicants who do not meet these conditions of employment may be subject to removal from the position and may be required to reimburse the Agency training costs incurred by the Agency for the Wildland Firefighter Academy.
    Selected applicants will be required to successfully attain the following NWCG Incident Management Qualifications by 9/30/2010 (or longer if extended) prior to promotion to the GS-05: Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5); or Squadboss (FFT1); or Helicopter Crewman (HECM).
    Transfer station costs will only be approved for current federal employees who have a Career or Career-Conditional appointment.

Duties:

  • Serves on a crew performing duties in fire suppression and/or fire prevention. Performs prescribed burning crew duties in order to reduce fuel hazards and disease, while protecting wildlife. Assists fire dispatch by operating radios, telephones, and other equipment that is used to exchange information for fire weather information or other suppression related activities.
    Lays or directs hose in the use of water. Moves dirt, chops brush, and fells small trees to build fire line using various hand tools such as an axe, shovel, Pulaski, and McLeod to control spreading wildland fire and/or to prepare lines prior to controlled burning. Chops, carries, and piles logging slash. Searches out and extinguishes burning materials by moving dirt, applying water by hose or backpack pump. Patrols fire line to locate and extinguish sparks, flare-ups, and hot spots that may threaten loss of control of the fire. Cleans, reconditions, and stores simple fire tools and equipment.
