Interviewing Skills for Applicants
Your resume or application GOT you an interview. Now, use the interview to GET the job. Think of this interview as your opportunity to sell yourself! Now is not the time to be modest or humble - you are the one who knows best the contributions you can make. Communicate clearly and confidently WHY the prospective employer should hire you.
Remember that other applicants, selected for an interview, also have the basic requirements for the job. Your interview objectives should set you apart from other candidates. Be prepared to demonstrate the following objectives in your interview:
- Demonstrate the skills, and special knowledge or abilities that uniquely qualify you for this position.
- Demonstrate the organizational insight you've gained.
- Demonstrate how your personal goals and competencies match their organizational culture, mission, and vision for the future.
Other candidates have skills, competencies, and goals similar to yours. An interview allows the employer to assess your confidence, organization and communication skills, enthusiasm, and commitment. Your future may be decided within the first few minutes of the interview, and that decision could likely be based upon the employer's first impression. The following includes tips designed to help you make that first impression a most positive one:
- Your personal appearance is important - dress conservatively, and don't choose any extreme or flamboyant colors or styles.
- Show up a few minutes early, so that you are calm and composed when you start the interview.
- Introduce yourself to the interviewer in a friendly, poised way - firm handshakes are appropriate.
- Know and use the interviewer's correct name and title.
- Maintain good eye contact throughout the interview.
- Be prepared to talk with limited detail about your accomplishments.
- Tell the truth, the whole truth - but don't inappropriately embellish your qualifications.
- Be prepared to ask intelligent questions about the prospective job and employer.
- Pay attention at all times!
- Don't give just "yes" or "no" answers when you have the opportunity to elaborate on your abilities and accomplishments.
- Convey a positive attitude towards yourself, your former employers, and the prospective employer.
- SMILE!
