Duties:

  • This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Director Planning and Project Management, Design Services Division, Electronics Engineering Branch, Operations and Maintenance Section.

    Works on one or more, of the following type of systems: Cable Television systems, Security systems (including CCTV, Metal Detection, etc.); Legislative Clock systems; Control systems; and/or Audio systems. Maintains, repairs adjusts and calibrates components and assemblies of the various systems or other systems that may be assigned thereto. The diagnosis and repair of complex electronic equipment for these systems includes, but is not limited to, such tasks as aligning and balancing analog circuits, testing digital circuits and replacing defective electronic parts and various solid state devices.

    Performs installation, test, and repair work on prototype systems and/or previously assigned systems with major modifications. Serves as the shop technical authority on the newest and most technologically complex electronic systems. Inspects, trouble-shoots, overhauls, repairs and tests electronic equipment and complete operational systems that may be assigned thereto. The diagnosis and repair of the complex electronic equipment for these systems includes, but is not limited to, such tasks as aligning and balancing analog circuits, testing digital circuits and replacing defective electronic parts and various solid state devices.

    Maintains, repairs, adjusts and calibrates prototype systems, components and assemblies of the various systems or other systems that may be assigned thereto. The diagnosis and repair of the complex electronic equipment for these systems includes, but is not limited to, such tasks as aligning and balancing analog circuits, testing digital circuits and replacing defective electronic parts and various solid state devices.

    Improvises to identify the cause of operating problems on new or modified systems when technical aids are incomplete. Identifies problems in blueprints and instructions. Trains Capitol Hill personnel on system operation, maintenance, and testing procedures, and continually provides advice and assistance to users.

    Test equipment used may include one or more of the following: synchroscopes, spectrum analyzers, wave analyzers, distortion analyzers, voltage standing wave ratio indicators, measuring instruments such as micrometers, ohmmeters, voltmeters, and ammeters.
  • Serves as a technical authority and expert on the newest and most technologically complex electronic systems.

    Maintains and calibrates unusually complex precision measurement equipment, instruments, and instrumentation systems complicated by frequent engineering changes and developments. Performs design changes and major modifications to unconventional equipment in order to improve equipment range, or to provide new capabilities to identify phenomena or parameters of interest in test applications.

    Adapts equipment to perform new or different functions to meet immediate objectives or assignments. These adaptations, in addition to the existing equipment, will be tested and evaluated using various types of electronic measuring instruments, including frequency and sweep oscillators, oscilloscopes, pulse generators and other related test equipment.

    Services equipment that is designed or modified to measure elements such as infrared radiation, temperature, gas, vacuum, and other characteristics. Adds new circuits, controls, wiring, or units with very critical tolerances or operating characteristics.

    Tests, operates and performs checkout procedures after repairs have been made to existing systems to ensure the test console and/ or fixture is functioning properly. Analyzes operating trends; proposes preventive maintenance down time to assure continued operating capability; and recommends units for overhaul or engineering evaluation for disposal.

    Interacts with engineers, manufacturer's representatives, engineering personnel, and field personnel in troubleshooting and developing modifications, substitutions, or corrections to equipment to reduce breakdowns and/or simplify repairs, servicing, or operation.
