Duties:

  • This position is located in the United States Botanic Garden (USBG), Horticulture Division, Exhibits and Displays Section. This Section is responsible for producing the majority of the USBG's program plants including, but not limited to, foliage, palms, vegetables, and many other plants that support special conservatory and outdoor gardens exhibits and programs. The incumbent will be assigned to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position at the USBG's Production Facility as well as in the conservatory and gardens located near the US Capitol.

    Specifically, the incumbent maintains and cultivates groups of specialized display plants. Waters, fertilizes and maintains the proper greenhouse conditions on temperature, humidity, ventilation and light levels for the plants.

    Repots and divides plant groups as needed to maintain the proper balance of foliage to root mass to provide long term care in a container or growing bed. Keeps plants free of weeds and ensures that the floors in the greenhouses are kept clean.

    Propagates (by division, cuttings, tissue culture, seeds or air layering) the plant groups at the appropriate time as needed. Maintains accurate plant propagation records. Requests labels as necessary. Keeps plants organized and sequenced for grow schedules.

    Assists in maintaining an Integrated Pest Management program within the Horticulture Division. Monitors pest populations and life cycles; determines threshold level and applies appropriate physical, cultural and biological or chemical controls.

    Maintains knowledge of seasonal schedules and works on grow schedules of plants.

  • Helps install aesthetic or educational displays related to the plants or plant families maintained within the Section or other Sections. This may include layout and design of the display, selecting and properly labeling the plants, maintaining and rotating plants in the exhibit.

    Takes an active approach to make the Garden more sustainable, including composting, soil re-use, and re-using other recyclable materials.

    Assists in removal of snow and trash, recycles, sweeps, and cleans on a regular basis.
