    The Architect of the Capitol (AOC) is a Drug Free Workplace. As part of the AOC's suitability assessment, a candidate tentatively selected for a position is required to submit to screening for illegal drug use. Satisfactory completion of a drug test is a condition of employment with the Agency. A candidate must test negative prior to being eligible for appointment into a position. We will schedule, provide, and cover the cost for the drug test.

Duties:

  • This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief Operating Officer, Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, Curator Division and in collaboration with the Curator. The Assistant Museum Curator is responsible for museum, historical, archival, research, and educational functions of the AOC, including management of the art conservation program.

    The incumbent supervises and coordinates the activities of the Curator's Office, the Records Management and Archives Branch, and the Photography Branch and works closely with the AOC Historic Preservation Officer and all jurisdictions to preserve the historical and aesthetic integrity of heritage assets and to support the Strategic Vision and AOC Preservation Policy

    Performs the administrative and human resource management functions relative to the staff supervised. Plans, schedules, and assigns work to subordinates. Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff members; provides feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance. Provides advice, counsel, and/or instruction to staff members. Recommends or approves appointments, selections, or reassignments to positions appropriate to the selection authority delegated. Effects disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area. Carries out Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and program activities.
  • Performs curatorial functions, including advising on potential acquisitions and display and preparing recommendations to the Congress. Oversees conservation of joint fine, decorative, and architectural art, including statues and murals. Maintains inventories, conducts condition assessments, and prepares reports on heritage assets. Maintains reference files and databases on works of art and architectural and administrative history. Works to ensure that works of art, facilities, and projects are documented and that historically significant records are preserved. Performs scholarly research related to the art and architecture of the Capitol and related buildings and grounds for publication, reference purposes, or talks and tours. Assists scholars and manages a fellowship program. Works to educate AOC staff, the Congress, and the public about heritage assets and their preservation. Prepares specialized exhibits and works with the Capitol Visitor Center staff on exhibitions and publications. Collaborates with other congressional and federal curators.



  • Performs work associated with exhibit planning and development. Contributes expertise associated with the subject matter, latest theories, or characteristics of the collection.
