Duties:

  • This position works as part of a motivated and effective team that issues daily avalanche advisories, performs in Search and Rescue missions for the Forest Service as Lead Agency in command, and increases visitor knowledge through avalanche education programs.

    The incumbent performs remote patrol duties in a dispersed recreation area to check for hazardous conditions that may include, but are not limited to avalanche hazards, icefall, crevices, and undermined snow. Determines current avalanche danger and forecasts future avalanche potential based on snow stability evaluations, weather and filed observations, and demonstrates knowledge and familiarity with mountain weather, snow metamorphism, snow physics, and the mechanics of avalanche release. Issues avalanche advisories for specific areas using field data as stated above.

    Acts as incident commander for search and rescue events in a specified area when the Forest Service is responsible as the lead agency from Dec. 1st to June 1st when delegated by the Lead Snow Ranger.

    Renders medical assistance to patients with injuries ranging from minor to life threatening using skills at the Emergency Medical Technician level.

    Performs high angle snow and ice rescue functions in the area.

    Responsible for the care and maintenance of a variety of winter mountaineering equipment such as ropes, ice-axes, climbing protection, etc.

    Interacts with a wide variety of recreational users to inform them of area hazards.
  • Performs a variety of technical work in support of a wilderness management program.
