Agency Marketing Statement:

  • The Presidio Trust is seeking an experienced Forester with the skills and passion to maintain and care for this treasured historic forest! The Presidio of San Francisco, once an Army base, is now a new kind of national park. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark District, in part because of its beautiful forest and historic landscapes. The Presidios richly forested and designed setting is one of the Armys most impressive accomplishments in landscape architecture.

Duties:

  • A soldier standing on the Presidios windy ridgeline during the Civil War years would have written home about sandy dunes and the open prospect to the bay. Beginning in the 1880s, the Army planted a vast eucalyptus, pine, and cypress forest. Thousands of trees were planted along the Presidios ridges and entrance gates. Today, the 300-acres forest is the largest feature that contributes to the Presidios National Historic Landmark District. It also provides habitat for birds and other wildlife and respite from the city for human visitors.

Our ideal candidate has expert professional knowledge and competency in forestry science. You have exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills, a tireless work ethic, and you think strategically. Youre highly motivated, with the ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.

    Responsibilities:
Develop, coordinate, and direct all aspects of forestry and arboricultural management, including reforestation, forest rehabilitation and improvement programs, and pruning.
Organize, assign, and direct a crew of Tree Worker/Arborists and Forestry Workers engaged in pruning, removal, planting, care, and maintenance of trees throughout the Presidio.
Serve as the Trust expert regarding forest and arboricultural resources in meetings/consultations with other local, state, and federal agencies.
Prepare and update resource management plans for Area B of the Presidio to insure preservation, protection, and enhancement of forest and arboricultural resources as specified in relevant laws and planning documents.
Develop, coordinate, and preview plans of all programs that affect the forest and arboricultural resources of the Presidio.
Identify the boundaries of forestry and arboricultural resource problems and issues, the information needed to resolve the issue, and the criteria and technique to use in addressing issues and problems.
Analyze data and prepare studies and reports on the impact of various management and public practices on a resource.
Develop detailed contract specifications, task statements, quality of work criteria, and related specifications for use in obtaining specific kinds of work and services through competitive contract and acquisition channels.
Prepare and deliver presentations to stakeholders and other interested parties regarding Presidio forest management.
