The National Institute of Justice is the research, development and evaluation agency to the U. S. Department of Justice. It applies science to advance criminal justice policy and practice in the United States through a grant program that funds research in the social, physical, and forensic sciences to provide objectives knowledge and innovative tools to reduce crime and promote justice.

Performs professional studies and investigations involving the theoretical foundations of computer science, and the algorithmic aspects of unorthodox and emerging computing paradigms, such as neural, DNA, molecular, and quantum computation. Applies or researches new computer science methods and techniques to store, manipulate, transform or present information by means of computer systems.

Investigates fundamental problems of computer architectural facets, such as pipeline and parallel processing; language theory, construction, and linguistics; artificial intelligence techniques and robotics; machine learning and statistics; quantum computation; collaborative systems design; networking and communications; human machine interface, data management and computer graphics; and software engineering.
