Agency Marketing Statement:

  • This position is located in the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Office of the General Counsel (OGC) whose mission is to provide legal advice and assistance to OJP on all types of legal issues that arise in the course of its operation.

Duties:

  • Serves as an organizational expert in analyzing the impact of existing or proposed legislation on FOIA and Privacy Act matters. Reviews and advises on complex cases; in situations where definitions or data are incomplete, controversial, or uncertain; or where the boundaries of the issues are difficult to determine.
  • Develops, implements, and manages a program to coordinate requests for information under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) or Privacy Act (PA).
  • Provides advice in sensitive or controversial areas that result in new guidelines on FOIA or Privacy Act matters. Communicates such guidelines to agency components and other agencies to ensure consistent FOIA/PA processing government wide. Documents and reports FOIA/PA issues and results to management. Advises and assists agency components on FOIA and PA requirements, and in making determinations on requests for information, documents, and records.
  • Coordinates FOIA and/or PA requests that require special handling. Alerts agency officials to any incoming requests which warrant special attention or are deemed potentially controversial, and which should be coordinated with other offices to ensure consistency of responses. Handles sensitive documents in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Provides program office with instructions on special handling if required. Develops guidance and procedural information
    regarding the agency's FOIA regulations and policies.
